Editor’s Note: The following is an interview with a Korean-American mother of four (Sharon Kim), currently residing in Washington State, USA. It was conducted by the IM Homeschool Story organization based in Seoul, South Korea. The original interview, in Korean, is included at the end of this text and was first published in December of 2024. (English translation by ChatGPT)

Thank you for participating in Homeschool Story. Homeschool Story was created to encourage and support families who are just beginning their homeschooling journey, as well as those who are experiencing the ups and downs of homeschooling. By sharing one another's stories, we hope to provide comfort, encouragement, and practical insights through both successes and failures, helping each family grow and thrive in their homeschooling journey. By sharing your family's story, you will be a great source of encouragement, comfort, and inspiration to many other homeschooling families.

1. What motivated your family to begin homeschooling?

Hello everyone, we are a family of six and have four children. Our family are Kim Soo Jung (Sharon), husband Jeon Jae Young (Victor), and children Yeseul (10), Yebin (7), Taeoh (5) , and Yerin (2). My husband and I are second generation Korean-Americans. My husband was born in Canada, and I was born in America. We were both living and working in Korea and met at our church there. We got married and had our first daughter in Korea and then came to America together. We have been in America together for nine years now. We had thought about homeschooling our children, and when it was time for our eldest daughter to start kindergarten, we chose to homeschool.

2. When did you start homeschooling, and what does homeschooling look like in your family?

When we got married, we had talked about possibly homeschooling. Our first daughter was going to start kindergarten when the pandemic started, so we thought that this would be the right time to start homeschooling. We now have four children and still homeschool together. We join co-op every Monday, and then from Tuesday to Friday we do school at home. We usually start the day with bible devotions and journaling, then go into doing different subjects. We like for them to journal so that it can help them to learn to reflect on their days and how they feel and what they are thankful for. The older children will have more independent work and self-learning while the younger children will be more guided. We value learning through good books so they will read many books on their own, or we read books together.

3. Are your children happy being homeschooled?

Since we started homeschooling from the very beginning, homeschool is normal for our children. They sometimes get curious about public school when they see other kids going, but we explain the vision of why we homeschool and that homeschool is school but a different way of doing it.

4. What is the most important value or priority in your family's approach to homeschooling?

What we consider important for homeschool is understanding the vision behind why we homeschool and helping our children to understand that and being prayerful for it. Homeschool is a way for us to fulfill “The Great Commission” by starting with our family. We want to disciple our children so that they follow Jesus, obey Jesus, know their identity in Jesus, and then can help others to do the same.

5. How do homeschool co-ops operate in the state of Washington, USA?

Every co-op can be different, but our homeschool co-op meets once a week and takes elective classes together. They have different classes such as art, science, history, music, theatre, and physical education. The moms teach different classes together. We also go on field trips together once a month. We go to museums, do volunteer work, and outdoor activities.

6. What differences have you noticed between homeschooling mothers in the United States and those in South Korea?

I've realized that I sometimes put too much pressure on myself and my children when it comes to education. We often have high expectations and think learning should look a certain way, but it doesn't always work like that. I've noticed that American moms tend to be more relaxed about this, giving their children more freedom to learn in their own way. They value experiences and believe that learning can look different for each child. I think we can learn from this approach. I believe that if we offer the right balance of support and challenge, our children will grow and thrive.

7. What do you consider to be the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling in the United States?

Some good things about homeschooling in America is that there are many homeschool co-ops and groups you can join, there are many resources and curricula for homeschool, and there is nature and space outdoors to play freely. One challenging aspect about homeschooling in America would be that it is difficult to find other Korean communities for homeschooling because there aren’t as many. Although we are Korean-American, we still want them to keep their Korean language and culture and to have Korean community and friends.

8. What is the homeschooling environment like in the state of Washington, where you currently live?

We were surprised that there were more homeschooling families and co-ops here than we thought. Especially because Washington state is known to have one of the best public education systems in America. That shows us that homeschooling is becoming more normal and valued.

9. What have been the biggest challenges you've faced while homeschooling, and how did you overcome them?

I think that it is important to recognize my children’s natural interests and giftings and help develop them in those areas. Homeschooling allows you to focus on specific areas in each child so you can customize their learning. Along with learning the core subjects, we are able to teach them more interesting things that they want to learn. We also believe that helping them to love to learn and developing social skills and EQ will prepare them for whatever career they choose.

10.What blessings or benefits have you gained through homeschooling?

Homeschooling is a great blessing but also can be challenging and hard work. Every day, I have to put in a lot of mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual energy to homeschool my children. I can feel pressure at times and can feel overwhelmed, but when I feel this way, I realize that I am not depending on God but on my own power. It reminds me again that I can place everything in Jesus’s hands through prayer and find rest.

11.Please share your homeschooling experiences and wisdom from Washington State with homeschooling parents in South Korea.

I'm so grateful for homeschooling because I get to learn alongside my children and see their excitement when they discover something new. One of the best parts is that we can learn together and view the world through a biblical lens. I'm also thankful for the time we spend as a family. Since my husband works from home, we share every meal and have lots of opportunities to talk, check in on how everyone is doing, and support each other with encouragement, prayer, and celebration of growth.

12.Please offer words of encouragement and comfort to homeschooling parents in South Korea.

It can be really beneficial to connect with other homeschooling families or join co-ops for community. I know it can sometimes be challenging to find local homeschool groups, so it's also valuable to have people in your life who can pray for your children and have spiritual community. It is also very helpful and fun being involved in extracurricular activities outside of school to provide opportunities for your children to learn and grow alongside others.

13.Please share your family's vision and goals.

Homeschooling, like anything worthwhile, requires hard work and commitment. But as we depend on Jesus and seek His kingdom first, He will provide everything we need. God sees our love for our children, and when we stay focused on Him and follow His guidance, He will take care of the rest because He is faithful. I believe God will bless our children in ways we can't even imagine. I try to stay prayerful, grateful for the opportunity to homeschool, and faithful each day as I disciple my children.

14.Please share your family's vision and goals.

Our vision for homeschool is to create good soil in our children’s mind and heart so that good seeds may be planted and grow. We want seeds of Gods truth to be planted and for them to be rooted deeply in Jesus and to bear good fruit in their lives. We believe that our spiritual, mental, emotional, and relational growth starts from the family home and through this, we get to disciple our children in Jesus; to love Jesus, to follow and obey Jesus, and to help others do the same.

15.If you were to describe homeschooling in just one sentence, what would you say? Based on your homeschooling experience so far, we'd like you to briefly define what homeschooling means to you. In other words, after years of homeschooling, what have you come to realize homeschooling truly is? Please share your personal definition in one sentence, and then briefly explain why you see it that way. Homeschooling is... (followed by a brief explanation of why you define it this way).

Homeschooling is to create good soil in our children. We want their minds and hearts to be good soil for God’s good seeds of truth, faith, and love to be planted. We want our children to be rooted deeply in Jesus and to bear good fruits in their lives.

질문사항은 아래와 같습니다.

1. 홈스쿨을 하게 된 동기는 무엇인가요?

안녕하세요 여러분, 저희는 6인 가족이고 4명의 자녀가 있습니다. 저희 가족은 김수정 씨, 남편 전재영 씨, 자녀 예슬(10), 예빈(7), 태오(5), 예린(2)입니다. 저와 남편은 한인 2세입니다. 남편은 캐나다에서 태어났고 저는 미국에서 태어났습니다. 우리는 한국에서 살면서 일하고 있었고 그곳의 교회에서 만났습니다. 우리는 한국에서 결혼해서 첫째 딸을 낳고, 함께 미국으로 왔어요. 우리는 미국에서 함께 지낸 지9년이 되었습니다. 우리는 아이들을 홈스쿨링할 생각을 하다가 큰딸이 유치원에 들어갈 때가 되자 홈스쿨링을 선택했습니다.

2. 홈스쿨은 언제 시작하셨고 어떻게 홈스쿨을 하고 있는지요? 

우리가 결혼했을 때 홈스쿨링에 관해 이야기를 나누었습니다. 팬데믹이 시작되었을 때 우리 첫째 딸이 유치원에 들어갈 예정이었기 때문에 우리는 지금이 홈스쿨을 시작할 적절한 시기라고 생각했습니다. 우리에게는 현재 4명의 자녀가 있으며 여전히 함께 홈스쿨링을 하고 있습니다. 우리는 매주 월요일에 Co-op에 가입하고 화요일부터 금요일까지 집에서 학교를 다닙니다. 우리는 보통 성경 묵상과 일기 쓰기로 하루를 시작한 다음, 다양한 주제를 공부합니다. 우리는 그들이 일기를 쓰는 것을 좋아합니다. 그러면 그들이 자신의 하루를 되돌아보고 감정과 감사함을 배우는 데 도움이 될 수 있습니다. 나이가 많은 아이들은 더 독립적인 작업과 자가 학습을 할 수 있는 반면, 어린 아이들은 더 많은 지도를 받게 됩니다. 우리는 좋은 책을 통해 배우는 것을 중요하게 여기기 때문에 아이들이 스스로 많은 책을 읽거나 함께 책을 읽습니다.   

3. 아이들이 홈스쿨 하는 것을 행복해 하고 있는지요?

우리는 처음부터 홈스쿨링을 시작했기 때문에 홈스쿨링은 우리 아이들에게 일상적인 일입니다. 그들은 때때로 다른 아이들이 다니는 것을 보면 공립학교에 대해 궁금해하지만 우리는 홈스쿨링을 하는 이유와 홈스쿨링은 학교이지만 다른 방식으로 진행하는 비전에 대해 설명합니다.

4. 선생님 가정에서 홈스쿨 할 때 가장 중요하게 생각하는 것은 무엇인가요?

우리가 홈스쿨링에서 중요하게 생각하는 것은 홈스쿨링을 하는 이유에 대한 비전을 아는 것과 우리 가족이 홈스쿨링을 하는 이유를 아이들에게 설명하는 것입니다. 홈스쿨은 가족부터 시작하여 “대명령”을 이행하는 방법입니다. 우리는 우리 자녀들이 예수님을 따르고, 예수님께 순종하고, 예수님 안에서 자신의 정체성을 알고, 모든 족속으로 제자를 삼을 수 있도록 제자화하기를 원합니다. 이 모든 것의 기초는 기도이며, 우리는 우리 자녀들에게 기도하고 주님을 찾는 방법을 가르쳐야 합니다.

5. 미국 워싱턴 주에서는 홈스쿨 코업 활동이 어떤 식으로 이루어지고 있나요?

모든 협동조합은 다를 수 있지만 우리의 홈스쿨 협동조합은 일주일에 한 번 모여 선택 수업을 함께 듣습니다. 미술, 과학, 역사, 음악, 연극, 체육 등 다양한 수업이 있습니다. 엄마들은 다양한 수업을 함께 가르칩니다. 우리는 한 달에 한 번씩 함께 현장 학습도 갑니다. 우리는 박물관에 가고, 봉사 활동을 하고, 야외 활동을 합니다.

6. 미국 홈스쿨 엄마들과 대한민국 홈스쿨 엄마들과의 다른 점은 무엇이 있을까요?

나는 때때로 교육과 관련하여 나 자신과 내 아이들에게 너무 많은 압력을 가한다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 우리는 종종 높은 기대치를 갖고 학습이 특정한 방식으로 이루어져야 한다고 생각하지만, 항상 그런 것은 아닙니다. 저는 미국 엄마들이 이 문제에 대해 좀 더 여유를 갖고 자녀에게 자신만의 방식으로 학습할 수 있는 더 많은 자유를 주는 경향이 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 그들은 경험을 소중히 여기며 학습이 각 어린이마다 다르게 보일 수 있다고 믿습니다. 나는 우리가 이 접근 방식에서 배울 수 있다고 생각합니다. 저는 우리가 지원과 도전의 적절한 균형을 제공한다면 우리 아이들이 성장하고 번영할 것이라고 믿습니다.

7. 미국에서 홈스쿨 할 때 좋은 점과 나쁜 점을 나눠주시면 감사하겠습니다.

미국 홈스쿨링의 좋은 점은 가입할 수 있는 홈스쿨 협동조합과 그룹이 많고, 홈스쿨을 위한 리소스와 커리큘럼이 많고, 야외에서 자유롭게 놀 수 있는 자연과 공간이 있다는 것입니다. 미국 홈스쿨링에 대한 한 가지 어려운 점은 홈스쿨링을 위한 다른 한인 커뮤니티가 많지 않기 때문에 찾기 어렵다는 것입니다. 우리는 한국계 미국인이지만 여전히 그들이 한국어와 한국 문화를 유지하고 한국 커뮤니티와 친구를 갖고 있기를 바랍니다.

8. 지금 살고 계시는 워싱턴 주의 홈스쿨 교육환경은 어떠한가요?
 

이곳에는 생각보다 홈스쿨링 가족과 협동조합이 많아서 놀랐습니다. 특히 워싱턴주는 미국 최고의 공교육 시스템을 갖춘 곳으로 알려져 있습니다. 이는 홈스쿨이 점점 더 일반화되고 가치 있게 변하고 있음을 보여줍니다.

9. 홈스쿨로 양육 받는 자녀들의 진로를 미국에서 어떻게 준비하고 계시는지요?

나는 내 아이들의 타고난 관심과 재능을 인식하고 그러한 분야에서 아이들이 발전하도록 돕는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다. 홈스쿨링을 통해 각 어린이의 특정 영역에 집중하고 학습을 맞춤화할 수 있습니다. 핵심과목 학습과 함께 아이들이 배우고 싶어하는 흥미로운 것들을 더 많이 가르칠 수 있습니다. 우리는 또한 그들이 사회적 기술과 EQ를 배우고 개발하는 것을 좋아하도록 돕는 것이 그들이 선택하는 어떤 직업에 대해서도 준비할 수 있다고 믿습니다.

10. 홈스쿨 하면서 힘들었던 점은 무엇이 있었고, 어떻게 극복하셨는지요?

홈스쿨링은 큰 축복이지만 도전적이고 힘든 일이기도 합니다. 매일 나는 아이들을 홈스쿨링하기 위해 정신적, 감정적, 육체적, 영적 에너지를 많이 쏟아야 합니다. 때로는 힘들고 부담스러울 때도 있지만, 이렇게 느낄 때면 내가 하나님께 의지한 것이 아니라 내 힘에 의지하고 있음을 깨닫게 됩니다. 기도를 통해 모든 것을 예수님의 손에 맡기고 안식을 찾을 수 있다는 사실을 다시 한번 일깨워줍니다.

11. 홈스쿨을 하면서 얻게 된 유익한 것과 감사한 것은 무엇이 있나요?

아이들과 함께 배우고 그들이 새로운 것을 발견했을 때 기뻐하는 모습을 볼 수 있기 때문에 홈스쿨링에 너무 감사합니다. 가장 좋은 점 중 하나는 우리가 함께 배우고 성경적인 렌즈를 통해 세상을 볼 수 있다는 것입니다. 가족으로서 함께 보내는 시간에 대해서도 감사드립니다. 남편이 재택근무를 하기 때문에 우리는 매 식사를 함께 하며 이야기를 나누고, 모두가 잘 지내는지 확인하며, 격려와 기도, 성장 축하로 서로를 지지하는 기회를 많이 갖고 있습니다.

12. 미국 워싱턴 주에서의 홈스쿨 경험과 지혜를 대한민국 홈스쿨 부모님들께 나눠주시면 감사하겠습니다.

다른 홈스쿨링 가족과 연결하거나 커뮤니티를 위한 협동조합에 참여하는 것은 정말 유익할 수 있습니다. 때로는 지역 홈스쿨 그룹을 찾는 것이 어려울 수 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 따라서 자녀를 위해 기도하고 영적인 공동체를 가질 수 있는 사람들을 삶에 두는 것도 가치 있는 일입니다. 또한 자녀가 다른 사람들과 함께 배우고 성장할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위해 학교 밖의 과외 활동에 참여하는 것은 매우 도움이 되고 재미있습니다.

13. 대한민국 홈스쿨 부모님들께 격려와 위로의 말씀 부탁드립니다.

가치 있는 모든 것과 마찬가지로 홈스쿨링에도 노력과 헌신이 필요합니다. 그러나 우리가 예수님을 의지하고 그분의 왕국을 먼저 구한다면 그분은 우리에게 필요한 모든 것을 공급해 주실 것입니다. 하나님은 우리 자녀를 향한 우리의 사랑을 보시고, 우리가 그분께 계속 집중하고 그분의 인도를 따를 때 그분은 신실하시기 때문에 나머지도 돌보실 것입니다. 저는 하나님께서 우리가 상상조차 할 수 없는 방법으로 우리 자녀들을 축복하실 것이라고 믿습니다. 나는 기도하는 마음을 갖고, 홈스쿨링 기회에 감사하며, 자녀들을 제자로 삼으면서 매일 충실하려고 노력합니다.

14. 가정의 비전과 목표를 이야기해 주세요.

우리 홈스쿨의 비전은 아이들의 마음과 생각에 좋은 토양을 만들어 좋은 씨앗이 심어지는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님의 진리의 씨앗이 심겨져 예수님 안에 깊이 뿌리내려 그들의 삶에서 좋은 열매를 맺기를 원합니다. 우리는 우리의 영적, 정신적, 정서적, 관계적 성장이 가정에서부터 시작되어야 한다고 믿으며, 이를 통해 우리는 우리 자녀들을 예수님 안에서 제자화하게 됩니다. 예수님을 사랑하고, 예수님을 따르고 순종하며, 다른 사람들도 그렇게 하도록 돕는 것입니다.

15. 선생님이 생각하시는 홈스쿨을 한 마디로 말씀해 주신다면? 그 동안 홈스쿨 하시면서 아! 홈스쿨은 이런 거구나! 라는 식으로 사모님께서 느끼신 홈스쿨에 대한 정의를 간단히 내려주시면 되겠습니다. 그리고 왜 그렇게 홈스쿨을 생각하시는지 짧게 설명해주시면 됩니다.

예) "홈스쿨은 예수제자 훈련소입니다."

홈스쿨링은 우리 아이들에게 좋은 흙을 만들어 주는 것입니다. 우리는 그들의 생각과 마음이 하나님의 좋은 씨앗인 진리와 믿음과 사랑이 심어지기 위한 좋은 토양이 되기를 원합니다. 우리 자녀들이 예수님 안에 깊이 뿌리내려 삶 속에서 좋은 열매를 맺기를 바랍니다.
